    Principal's Message

    Dear Families,

Term 2 is flying by with only a couple of weeks left to go. The last 2 weeks have been very busy, with students in years 3-5 going to the swimming pool each day for our annual Swimming & Water Safety Program. We have had other events happening around this.

    Interschool Cross Country

On 5th June we had a large team of runners represent our school at the SPSSA Interschool Cross Country Carnival, held at Bayview Secondary College. On a clear, crisp day the students excelled as they pushed themselves to complete the course and cheered on all other runners. Our Grade 5 boys achieved second place in the team event and the Grade 4 boys achieved third place. This week we have had several runners travel to Symmons Plains to run in the All Schools Cross Country event. Congratulations to Madeleine for being selected to run in the National Championships after achieving 3rd place in her race at Symmons Plains.

Mid-year Reports and Parent Teacher Discussions

This week all students have received mid-year reports, showing progress in English, Mathematics and Science (for Year 1 to Year 6) as well as showing work habit ratings.

Teachers have spent many hours examining and discussing student work samples, ensuring accurate ratings for each student. At Parent-Teacher Discussions next week, teachers will share student work samples with parents and discuss next learning steps. If you have missed the cut off for making an appointment for a parent-teacher discussion, please telephone our office to book in.

To coincide with Parent-Teacher Week, all classes have completed “Young Archies” portraits, now on display in our courtyard. Please make time to have a look at these wonderful art works, while you are visiting our school. On Wednesday 26th we will be running a BBQ inn our courtyard, with sausages and vegie burgers for $2 each (cash or card). We will also have second hand uniform items available for a gold coin donation.

    CSPS Motto

We invite students and family members to consider making a suggestion of a new motto for Campbell Street Primary School. We would like a short phrase which represents the rich diversity of our wonderful school community. Come in and place your suggestions in the box in the front foyer by Monday 1st July.

    Premier’s Reading Challenge

Monday 17th June was the first day of the Premier's Reading Challenge for 2024. This challenge runs for 10 weeks and is another great opportunity to encourage your child to read at home. Just as with our home reading program, books for the Premier's Reading Challenge can be read to, with, or by children. This means that story lovers and readers of all abilities can participate. While our regular home reading program counts nights of reading, the Premier's Reading Challenge counts books read. Make sure to record all books read in the Premier's Reading Challenge booklet. Good luck, readers!

    Home Reading Workshop

This week we ran a workshop for parents about reading with children at home. Thank you to parents who came along to build their knowledge of reading to, with and by children.

    Eco Warriors

The Eco Warriors Club has set up a hard to recycle collection point in our front foyer. We are collecting bread tags, mobile phones, pens, highlighters and markers as well as cling wrap and zip lock bags.

Please feel free to add to these! If you want to investigate what happens once these items are sent to recycling here are some useful websites:

    Pens and cling wrap:

    Class News

    Kinder Ferguson

Last week Kinder Ferguson went with Kinder/Prep Wishart on an excursion to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.  This was linked to our investigation into Tasmanian animals that has been a focus for us this term.  The weather was looking very wet in the morning, but we were lucky that the rain cleared for the whole time we were at Bonorong.  Phew!

After arriving by bus and eating our recess, we were given a tour of some of the animals at Bonorong.  First, we visited Marley the Tasmanian Devil.  We were told some interesting facts about devils such as when the devil joeys are born, they are the size of a grain of rice!

We also met Tessa the wombat.  She had to be encouraged to come out of her shelter because of the weather.  The Kinder students thought it was very interesting that wombats have a very solid backside that they use to block the entrance to their borrow and prevent predators from entering or hurting other soft areas of their body.  Fascinating!

In the bird enclosure we saw lots of cockatoos, such as Ruby, the beautiful red-tailed black cockatoo.

After our tour, we broke into smaller groups to feed the wallabies and kangaroos.  If we were feeling brave, we could even give the wallabies and kangaroos a scratch on their chest.

Finally, we explored some other areas of the Sanctuary before eating our lunch and then heading back to school on the bus.  It was a fun, muddy day with the animals at Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.

    What’s Happening in 3/4 Milne/Thurstans

We have been discussing ways that we can show ‘Growth’ in the classroom. This has newly become our school focus value. It was pleasing to see every student displaying ‘Growth’ during the Learn to Swim program.

    Science

In Science, we have been conducting experiments using toy cars. We have been observing what surfaces around the school have the most and least friction. We have had to apply our science inquiry skills to write a procedural text, evaluate our findings and to find variables to the problem.

    Maths

In Maths, we have been learning many ways to solve subtraction problems. Some of the strategies we have been developing our skills in include; bridging to ten, half split, number line, slide the difference, related facts and the written, vertical algorithm.

    Spelling

In Spelling, we have been learning about morphology. We have discussed how words are related by meaning and structure. We have looked at prefixes and suffixes that go with the base ‘struct’ to form many words. We have also used a ‘struct’ text to practise our handwriting and fluency reading.

    Writing

In Writing, we have been learning about text structures and language features of a persuasive text. Students are beginning to write a persuasive piece about a rule or law they would like to change. We have been discussing communities, rules and laws during our HASS inquiry. One rule we have been debating is whether we should or should not be allowed to ride bikes, scooters, and skateboards at school. We have been using our persuasive language to write book reviews to go with the Premier’s Reading Challenge, which starts this week.

    Assembly Certificates

Congratulations to the students who were awarded Assembly Certificates on Tuesday 18th June 2024.

    School Association News

The disco was held last night for the children to enjoy a night of dancing and fun with their friends. Thank you so much to DJ Kale and our fundraising co-ordinator Sarah. We hope everyone had a great evening.

A funding request was received and approved from a 3/4 class for additional board games for each class and the library. The children did a great job writing this request.

Amazing effort by Shanan and the volunteers in the Soccer shack on Thursdays and Saturday morning, special mention to local councillor Ben Lohberger for our helping to cook the sausages and serve customers. You don’t have to have children who play soccer to help out. All proceeds go back to the School Association.

Have you seen the community raffle posters around? Funds raised from this will be going towards the funding of the new boars games for the children.

Keep your eyes peeled - we are currently investigating holding a Quiz Night in Term 3. Let us know if you can help out.

Want to get involved with the Association but don’t know where to start? Jump on over to the TASSO website for more resources on what we do - Committee - TASSO and while you are there take a look at what the Secretary does. We are still on the lookout for a Secretary. Many hands make light work.

Don’t forget about the WhatsApp groups which have been create for each year group. Send us an email if you need more information. cspsasecretary@gmail.com

Our next meeting is Tuesday 30th July 6pm

Next Wednesday our wonderful SRC leaders are holding a fundraiser for the Rescue Cat Safe Haven Inc. Students are invited to dress as a cat (mask, ears, tail or full costume) or to come in free dress. We ask that students either bring along a gold coin donation, or some families may prefer to donate an item off the lists below.
