CSPS Newsletter 10/11/2023
Principal’s Message
Dear Families,
Suddenly we are nearly halfway through Term 4! The second half of the term is going to be action packed.
Celebration of Learning - Open Afternoon
Next Wednesday 15th November, all of our classrooms will be open for parents to visit and see some of the fantastic learning your child/ren have undertaken this year. Students will have learning samples to share and there will be activities for students and parents to join in. Please come along anytime between 1:45pm and 2:55pm. Our court area will be open for parking.
Government House Art Project
Students have been very busy working on their artwork for the Government House Art Project. Students have completed 3 detailed sketches, then selected one of these to reproduce as an acrylic painting on canvas. Here are some of the works in progress.

Outdoor Learning Area
We continue to watch in excitement as our new Outdoor Learning Area takes shape. It is like a whole new world opening up before us and we can’t wait to try out all the new features!

Interschool Swimming Carnival
Last week a big team of over 30 students represented CSPS at the Division C Interschool Swimming Carnival. Our team came a very commendable fourth place against strong competition. Here are some of our team with the 4th place banner. See Mr Latham’s report below in the newsletter.

Bikes and Scooters
We love seeing our students arrive at school on bikes and scooters and we do have strict rules about usage of bikes and scooters at school. These are not permitted to be ridden in the school grounds before or after school. Bikes and scooters are also NOT to be ridden inside school buildings. Unfortunately some students have been riding their scooters through the hallway leading to the bike/scooter storage area and this has damaged the carpet in that area. Please ensure that your child/ren wheel their bikes/scooters all the way to the storage area.

Year 5/6MI
Our last contribution to the school newsletter for the year.
What has been happening? What will be happening!
Wow what a busy year it has been with so many things we have been involved in.
In Term 3 we visited Elizabeth College for Science Week, went to the Marine Discovery Centre, invited grandparents to our Open Afternoon for Science Week as well as visiting the Festival of Bright Ideas. Students participated in the Growing up Program, Book Week, the School Disco and went to the Playhouse Theatre to view HCH’s drama performance “We Will Rock You.”
Term 4 is proving to be just as busy. We have started with the swimming carnivals and Taroona High Taster Day. Coming up we have 3 lots of Hobart City High School Japanese experiences starting on 6th November and 20th November at CSPS and one more where we will travel to HCHS on the 4th of December. We also have another open classroom afternoon on the 15th of November as well as Bush Connections on the 2Ist of November. Students who are not part of the Peer Support Program will be reading with our Kinder Buddy Class once a week this term. We are also organising everything needed for farewelling our Year 6 students. This all happening along with our classroom foci. Our HaSS focus is Asia, in Mathematics we will be exploring statistics, in Literacy we have begun exploring how to make our creative writing more interesting through the lens of “Show not Tell” and creating moods and in Science we will be exploring changes to the Earth’s surface.

Year5/6LE
In year 5/6 Lockey/Eastman we have been studying a unit on Asia. The emphasis of this unit is on data representation and interpretation involving populations statistics and the geography of Asia. The unit started with identifying the location of Asia’s 49 countries. The focus widened to Asia’s current and future population projections, particularly between the years 2000 and 2050.
Students have been using Microsoft Excel to graph and represent their data and then drawing conclusions. Comparisons are being made with Asia’s overall population and the global population in the past, at present and into the future. Lines of inquiry have focused on comparing the population of individual countries in Asia such as India and Pakistan or China and India. The latter part of the unit will focus on the physical features of Asia, its people, and the cultural diversity of the continent.
See below. A bar graph comparing Asia’s population growth with that of Pakistan.

See below. A bar graph showing Asia’s projected population from 2050 to 2100.

Physical Education
To begin Term 3 in PE lessons students took part in an Australian Rules Football unit. We were lucky enough to have Joe from AFL Tasmania to come along and provide some coaching during our lessons. All students learned a lot and demonstrated great skill improvement. Following on from that all students took part in a Gymnastics unit. They learned about the importance of warming up and stretching before executing gymnastics movements to help their bodies get into specific shapes used in different skills. K-2 had a focus on learning these body shapes and working on developing skills such as rolling, jumping and landing. 3-6 students worked with partners to develop a routine in which they were asked to perform in front of their peers. After this was completed Grade 3-6 students took part in some dodge and throw games to develop their throwing and catching skills as well as things such as attacking, defending & decision making. To finish the term all students completed a skipping unit of work where the focus was on learning new skills and developing timing and jumping to a beat.
Term 4 sees our focus shift to ball striking skills that are used in sports such as Tennis, Cricket, Golf and Tee-Ball. It will certainly be a busy and fun way to end the year!

Division C Interschool Swimming Carnival
On Friday the 3rd of November, 34 Grade 3-6 students went to the Division C SPSSA Interschool Swimming Carnival at the Hobart Aquatic Centre. These students were selected to represent the school based on their outstanding efforts at the school swimming carnival earlier in the Term. A huge well done to all that went and competed. Everyone tried their best and came away with some spectacular results. As a school group we finished 4th overall and our Swimming Captains (Clover & Ziggy) were presented with a banner for us to display at school.
