CSPS Newsletter 15/9/2023
Principal’s Message
Dear Families,
Can you believe it’s only two weeks until the end of Term 3!
Parent-Teacher Discussions
These are being held next week and it’s wonderful to see that so many parents have already booked in for a chat with their child/ren’s teacher/s. This is a great chance to catch up with teachers to celebrate growth in student learning and to discuss any areas of concern. Bookings close today!
School Disco
Excitement is mounting for the CSPS Disco, to be held on Thursday 28th September 5:00pm - 6:30pm for students K-6. Tickets are available for purchase on Qkr! The School Association is working hard to make this an amazing end of term event, so dig out your neon clothing and be ready to dance! Hot food and drinks will be available for children to purchase on the night and there will also be the option of facepainting for $2. Please note: this event is only for students K-6 enrolled at Campbell Street Primary School.
Sports Colours Day
Our term will finish with a dress up day to support SPEAK UP! Stay ChatTY. Students are invited to come along to school dressed in the uniform or colours of a favourite sports team. Students are asked to bring a gold coin to support SPEAK UP! Stay ChaTY. Thank you to our Student Representative Council for organising this event.
2024 Classes
Our planning for 2024 class structures and staffing is underway. Compiling class placements is complex. We take into account a wide range of student needs (academic, social and emotional) and we ensure balanced class groupings.
We invite input from teachers, students and parents/carers, with final decisions being the responsibility of the Principal.
Teachers will be asking students to nominate 2 friends as peers they would like to have in their class in 2024. These may be friends within their current class group or in another class/year level. Parents/carers may wish to have a conversation with your child/children around their friendship groups. We will do our best to maintain social connections by ensuring that at least one person identified is included in your child’s 2024 class grouping.
Requests regarding academic, social and/or emotional needs will be carefully considered, but not guaranteed. Parent/carers are invited to submit requests to myself, in writing by letter or email to susan.jeffery@decyp.tas.gov.au by Wednesday 18th October.
Please note: requests for specific teachers do not form part of our placement process.
Due to the complexity of class placements we will not be able to accept requests after Wednesday 18th October.
A reminder to inform the school, in writing, if your child/ren will not be returning to Campbell Street Primary School in 2023, by the end of Term 3 please.
Thank you for your support with this – we look forward to sharing our 2024 class structures and placements with you later in Term 4.
Playground Project
With the near completion of the drainage works in our bottom playground area we are excited that we now have a date for the start of our bottom playground redevelopment. We are creating a wonderful ‘Nature Play’ area for outdoor learning, including elements such as a dry riverbed, balance logs, teepees, an upgraded mud kitchen and a timber stage. Excavation works commence on 11th October (in the school holidays) and are expected to take 3-4 weeks altogether.
Every Day Counts!
Consistent attendance at school is one of the biggest indicators for future success. Every day at school matters. Even a few minutes missed every day adds up to a signifcant amount over time. The start of each day is key learning time, when explicit instructions are given and students are organised for a day of learning. Please let us know if you are having difficulty getting your child/ren to school every day, on time every day. We can offer support strategies.

Carpark Drop-off and Pick-up Zone
We ask parents/carers to respectfully use our drive through drop-off and pick-up zone, as well as our carpark parking spaces. If you are using the drive through zone, you must stay in your vehicle. Leaving your vehicle unattended creates a huge problem for other drivers. Please do not park in the disabled parking spaces if you do not have a permit. Also, please do not use our carpark as a space to leave your vehicle while you are at work elsewhere. Lately we have had staff and parents who have been unable to secure a parking spot during the day due to some people using our carpark as a public parking area. Our carpark is a tow away zone for people who do not have permission to use it. We know our carpark is tricky and we thank everyone who respects our school community by following the guidelines.
Term 4 Week 1
A heads up that all students Prep-6 will need to have their swimming gear ready in Week 1 of Term 4. Our P-2 Water Orientation Program begins that week and we also have our annual Swimming Carnival for Years 3-6 on Thursday of Week 1. More information about these events will be sent home before the end of Term 3.
Best wishes,
Susan Jeffery
Principal
Class News
Kinder Ferguson
It has been a busy Term for Kinder Ferguson. We started off the term with our excursion to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary, which was a continuation of our inquiry focus in Term 2 on Tasmanian animals. We’ve also had Science Week, the Growing Up Program, Book Week and all the disruption with our much needed, but noisy, drainage works and upgrades to the playground going on outside of our Kinder class. The students have coped incredibly well, shown great adaptability and resilience, and have continued to learn through all of it! The Kinder students should be very proud of themselves!
Here are some photos from Science Week and our explorations of old technology and new innovations.

In numeracy this term students have been continuing their work with number. Each student is on a different journey with their understanding of number; therefore we have also had many different number activities going on. Some have been working on counting collections, recognising and ordering numerals up to 5, 10 or 20, whilst a few have been looking at numbers up to and beyond 100. We have also started to look at and discuss two-dimensional (2D) shapes.

In literacy this term we have started to explore rhyme. We have been talking about what a rhyming word is, playing rhyming games, singing rhyming songs and reading stories containing words that rhyme. Students have been excited to listen for and share rhyming words they hear, see or come up with themselves. They have each created rhyming sentences with matching drawings to create a big class book of rhymes. We have also had a sharing roster this term where each student gets to share about a particular topic or item once a fortnight. Other students then get to ask questions. This is a great chance for students to develop their speaking, listening and questioning skills.

Students have been enjoying our new dramatic play space – a pizza shop. Students have delighted in taking orders, making pizzas and serving customers in the restaurant or delivering pizzas. This is also linked to our focus on 2D shapes, with linking activities such as creating pizzas with 2D shape toppings, then counting and naming the different 2D shapes on our pizzas.

Year 3/4IA
Over the past couple of weeks, 3/4 IA have been exploring money in Maths. Students worked in groups to explore how they could represent money values in a range of ways.
They used play money to create the same amount with different representations of notes and coins and worked out how much change would be required after purchasing certain café menu items with a budget of $20 per group.
Students participated in a coins scoop activity where they scooped a number of coins out of a container and counted these coins to determine their value.

Students played a game in pairs to race to see who could get to $1 first by rolling dice and selecting that amount of 5c coins which they could then trade or exchange for other larger coins until they reached a total of $1.

Finally, students were able to create a ‘Book Club Wishlist’ selecting books from the Book Club magazine and then determining which notes and coins they would need to use to purchase these items.

Science Day was a lot of fun. Grandparents and other elders were a great help, and there were a lot of smiling faces.

Hobart City Partner Schools Consultation
In 2021 Hobart City High School (HCHS) and Elizabeth College (EC) formed the Hobart City Partner Schools. This arrangement has enabled both schools to work closely together to give students strong learning pathways for employment, further training. or higher education.
In 2022, Year 7 co-educational student cohort and existing Years 8-10 girls attended the Ogilvie Campus of HCHS, with remaining Years 8-10 boys attending the New Town Campus.
From 2023, HCHS became fully co-educational. The New Town Campus focuses on Years 9 and 10, with the Ogilvie Campus focusing on Years 7 and 8, as well as hosting the Hobart Big Picture program for years 9-12.
We are now wanting to look at the next steps for our schools so more of our young people can pursue their passions and continue to learn for longer, as they start to shape their future.
3P Advisory, a Tasmanian consultancy which specialises in stakeholder engagement and consultation, has been engaged to undertake consultation on HCHS and EC’s current model and partnership arrangements to identify a future operational model.
This planned work has been brought forward to bring certainty and stability to everyone allowing the preferred model being implemented from 2025.
3P will be holding a session for our feeder schools, School Association members on:
- 18 September at 5:30 pm in the Library at our Ogilvie Campus
During consultation, consideration will be given to:
- HCHS and EC stay separate, as they currently are, but continue to work in partnership; or
- They combine to become one school on three campuses.
- Any other reasonable alternative options identified through the consultation process.
However, it is important to know that these are possible options only and nothing has been decided. We want your thoughts about how HCHS and EC can best deliver learning outcomes and strong pathways for all students, both now and into the future.
The purpose of these sessions is to lead and focus discussions around:
- Identifying and capturing what you see as the opportunities, challenges and concerns.
- Discussing the possible options and any other options which could be considered.
- Looking at the current partnership with Elizabeth College to delivery Year 11 and 12 pathways – what’s working and where improvements can be made.
- How to deliver the best outcomes and strongest pathways for all students, both now and into the future.
In addition to the above session, 3P will also host walk-in sessions for all community members on:
- 26 September from 2:45 – 4:00 pm (New Town Campus)
- 27 September from 2:45 – 4:00 pm (Ogilvie Campus)
- 28 September from 2:45 – 4:00 pm (Elizabeth College)
These sessions aren’t structured and you don’t need to make a booking. You can simply turn up to ask some questions or get more information.
If you can’t make the sessions, but still want to be involved, please contribute through the online feedback portal by visiting the link below or calling (03) 6184 8121.
